History of the Alpen-Trail
 
As the Alpirod in 1995 was suddenly and totally unexpectedly cancelled, Lutz Binzer and I came relatively to a quick decision, not have the race completely come to an end.
The Alpirod was in many respects a landmark and not only in Europe. It was the most meaningful and best organized stage race in sleddog sport and had many new things like stage races, reverse start (i.e. fastest musher starts last), a dog pool, very demanding trail management, super organization with an international staff and last but not least a super beautiful trail in all of the Alps.
We wanted to carry on a downsized version of the Alpirod.
The idea, to drive a clearly stress-free race on the most beautiful trails in Europe, is and was our dream. The Alpen-Trial was to fulfill this.
However, there were two hurdles to overcome. Where do we get a staff with about 24 people and a sponsor willing to share the costly expense of the race?
To our amazement, we got together very quickly a staff through our friends and veteran Alpirod helpers. Royal Canin, which is inseparably linked with the names Alpirod and Alpen-Trail, was willing to become sponsor and has developed an excellent high performance dog food for this race as well.
Once again, I would like to give a special thanks to the staff and sponsor. They have both accomplished something exceptional beyond the usual standards.
I would like to thank the participating athletes for always giving a fair competition and sometimes putting on a good party, too.
